Hotel Heritage Works
As custodians of a Grade II listed building, we have a responsibility not only to protect its history, but to care for it thoughtfully and proactively. In 2026, we will be undertaking carefully planned heritage restoration works to the front of the Goodenough Hotel, ensuring this much-loved building remains safe, beautiful and fit for the future.
I am particularly glad that we are able to carry out these restorative capital works in a timely and considered way thanks to a forward-thinking board and executive team. In my experience of managing heritage commercial properties, securing funding can often be a challenge until something reaches breaking point, rather than investing properly, at the right time, and doing things well, which is a privilege not to be taken for granted.
The works will be phased and closely managed, with no expected impact on guest access, comfort, or enjoyment of Mecklenburgh Square. While a small number of rooms will be temporarily closed, this also gives us a welcome opportunity to carry out light-touch refurbishments behind the scenes. I’m especially pleased that we will be replacing carpets in our public areas - something many of our guests have been asking for - alongside other subtle improvements to enhance comfort while respecting the character of the building.
During the project, reception may be temporarily located in House 24, with clear signage in place to guide guests on arrival. Our team will be on hand, as always, to ensure a warm welcome and a smooth experience.
We are very much looking forward to continuing to support and contribute to college life throughout 2026, while investing in the long-term care of our historic home. Thank you to our guests, members and community for your understanding and support as we take this important step forward together.
-Helen Jackson, General Manager
